Alex shows off his wares at his second hand clothes stall
Alex, 45 lives with his wife and 5 children (aged from 5 years to 20) in Kibera and has been a casual labourer for last 20 years working from day-to-day in the timber business. His wife is a housewife and he takes care of his mother, who he lives with. “A friend introduced me to Faulu when I was looking for a place to deposit money for saving and thinking about getting a loan. My friend told me that I needed to be part of a group to get a loan.”

Ehias, 49, originally from Kisii, has been a businessman since 1981. He moved to Nairobi in the 1980s to further his businesses and in 1991, he moved to Kibera. Ehias’s wife now manages the m-pesa stall and kiosk at their home in Kibera. Ehias has seven children; six girls and one son. The first born are between the ages of 26 and 34 and he lives with the four youngest (the youngest of whom is 5) at their home. He also supports his mother and brother, who acts as a business partner to him.

Carolyne, lives in Kawangware with her husband and children both boys, aged 11 years and 8 years, she also cares for her sister and her parents. She heard about Faulu 12 years ago, when people from her community got involved. Caroyne eventually joined Faulu in 2006 when a friend approached her with the purpose of starting a group to access a loan. After recruiting the other 15 members of the group, called Mother’s Success, she became the Chairwoman of the group.
